Cartoon: Where's the Rain When Ya Need It?

This cartoon by Andy Davey from The Sun combines the England cricket team's victory over Australia in the Ashes Test Match series and the terrible floods which have hit parts of Australia.

Two Australians are watching the cricket on TV. Australia are losing and only an intervention by the rain can save them. The irony is that flood water is pouring into the house as fish swim past the window. There's no shortage of rain, but none "when ya need it".

COMMENTARY

1. Note the Australian stereotypes: cans of beer, beer bellies, sunburn, white vest and shorts, flip flops, hats with corks on strings (to keep the flies off).

2. Some men use mate as a way of addressing other men. This is particularly true of Aussies (i.e., Australians).

3. 'Ya' is informal English for 'you'.
