Learning English from Cartoons: New York Soda Ban.

This cartoon by Gary Varvel, cartoonist for the Indianapolis Star, relates to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed ban on the sale of large sodas. Bloomberg wants to bar restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas, food carts and delis from selling sodas and other sugary drinks in servings larger than 16 ounces, saying it is a way to fight obesity in a city that spends billions of dollars a year on weight-related health problems. The ban could take effect as early as next March, unless the critics who accuse Bloomberg of instituting a "nanny state" can get the courts or state lawmakers to step in.

THE CARTOON
A New York cop tells a pot-smoker, "Drop it! The soft drink, not the pot." The joke is that drinking a soda is now considered to be a more serious offence than smoking pot.

VOCABULARY
1. Pot is an informal term for the drugs cannabis and marijuana.
2. Soda is a sweet fizzy drink.
