Many people spend their
entire day online. Actually, it seems to be the norm nowadays. If you want to
feel part of the gang, you should keep your gadgets all the time connected. Doing
that, you will be able to check what your ‘friends’ are doing, eating, dating
etc.
Having said all that
above, I decided to suggest you folks other ways of spending some quality time
on the internet.
I will be quite direct
though. Just read the brief comments about each site and check them if you like
it.
Are you tired of doing the
same things? Why don’t you learn a thing or two here?
Taking into account that I am not being paid to write
this list, I’d like to inform you all that I won’t be providing you all with plenty
of details about each site. If you want to learn more about them, please check
by yourselves. I have spent way too much time writing this one. Please, feel
free to suggest more sites if you like it.
1 - For video lectures on just about any subject, go to this Khan Academy and learn almost anything with those videos:
2 – I bet you guys have heard about TED. Well, it’s not a secret that the internet has
made things pretty easier to those who want to learn a lot of things online. If
you are one of those guys who love learning (In short-talk form) by seeing and
listening, welcome to TED:
3 – “ACADEMIC
EARTH was launched on the premise
that everyone deserves access to a world-class education.” How about classroom
lectures? Well, the world has changed dramatically over the last decades. Why don’t
you have a go in this collection of free online college courses from the
world’s top universities?
4 – I particularly loved this idea of learning and helping. I myself have
visited this website so many times! On FREERICE.COM you
may expand your vocabulary while feeding the hungry:
5 – Do you love movies, TV series and videos? Well, I do! Before watching
any movie or TV series, I always read Rotten Tomatoes. It’s pretty easy to use. You may login
with Facebook to share your reviews with friends, create a want-to-see list,
and more! Some of my students read and comment on Rotten Tomatoes. They’ve told me it
has helped them improve their writing and reading skills. Check it out:
6 – How often do you read books? Do you have a favorite writer? What’s your
favorite genre? If you like literature, you’ll most certainly enjoy this one: GoodReads.
You will be able to see which books your friends are reading; track the books you
are reading, have read, and want to read; check out your personalized book
recommendations; find out if a book is a good fit for you from our community’s
reviews…
7 – If you don’t want to interact in another language, this Brazilian version will suit you well:
8 – I don’t have to talk about LinkedIn. This one if for those who know the
importance of networking.
9 – Now, we’re talking! Quora is my favorite social networking site. Among
many things, you can interact, learn, teach and the best thing of them all, everything
is in English (ONLY). Check it out, won’t you? And why am I celebrating the
fact that everything is English? Well, have you checked Facebook lately? Do it
and you will understand what I’m talking about.
10 – Coursera,
a for-profit educational technology company founded by computer science
professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller from Stanford University that offers
massive open online courses (MOOCs). Coursera works with
universities to make some of their courses available online, and offers courses
in physics, engineering, humanities, medicine, biology, social sciences,
mathematics, business, computer science, and other subjects:
